Rising sophomore athlete Amorion Walker has been the talk of the spring as he transitions from wide receiver to cornerback. His 6-3 frame, coupled with elite change of direction abilities and 4.2, 4.3 speed per Mike Sainristil, has the coaches and fans drooling over what he might be able to do in the defensive backfield.

Walker played a little bit of defensive back last year as a true freshman, but was primarily viewed as a wide receiver. Now, it looks like he may have at least one other responsibility on his plate, and that's as a return man.

This is a bit of speculation, but after playing, coaching, studying and covering football now for more than 30 years of my life, the picture below, from Walker's Instagram page, sure looks like him making a first move after fielding a punt. It's possible he's changing direction after grabbing a kickoff or even an interception, but mbased on where the other coaches are standing and how the referee is watching, I see punt return.

We already know that Walker's short-space quickness is elite and confirmed, so if he's really is as fast as Sainristil claims, he's tailor made to return punts. The keys to being a good punt returner are ball security, change of direction, quick feet and eventually long speed — Walker is apparently phenomenal in all of those areas.

I know we haven't seen much of Walker in a Michigan uniform yet, but I'm excited about watching him in the No. 1 jersey in 2023. If he can lock down the cornerback spot opposite Will Johnson and also impact the game as a return man, he'll definitely be viewed as one of the most important young pieces on the team come midseason.
